Tidecast Privacy Policy
Date of last update: 6/13/2026
Hi there! Thanks for using Tidecast. This Privacy Policy explains how we handle the information you might send us when you report a problem with the app, and how Tidecast uses location to show nearby tide information. We want to make sure you know exactly what happens to the data and how we keep it safe.
Your Data Is Yours
We think your data is your own business, and we want to keep it that way. Here's what we promise to do with your data.
What Information We Collect
Unless you run into a problem with our app and you choose to send us an email, we collect no data.
If you run into a problem with our app, you might choose to send us a zipped copy of the current Tidecast.log file. This file helps us understand what went wrong. Before sending, you can see everything in the email and attached file to make sure nothing private is being sent.
The log file can include timestamps, app events, error messages, selected tide station IDs, buoy IDs, and other diagnostic details needed to investigate the problem.
Tidecast may also ask for your location, but only if you choose to allow it. Location access is handled by Apple Core Location, and Tidecast uses it to find the nearest NOAA tide station or to center the station map near you.
Your current device location is used inside the app. It is not sent to us, or any server we operate.
How We Use Your Information
Bug Reports: We use the email you send and any zipped log file only to figure out what went wrong and to fix the problem.
Location: Tidecast uses your current location only to choose nearby tide stations and make the map easier to use. After the app chooses a tide station, Tidecast asks public data providers for tide, weather, buoy, and aviation weather information using station IDs, tide-station coordinates, buoy IDs, or aviation weather station IDs. These requests do not include your current device latitude and longitude.
Public Data Providers: Tidecast uses public data from NOAA, the National Weather Service, the National Data Buoy Center, and AviationWeather.gov. Like normal internet requests, those services may receive technical request details such as your IP address, request time, and User-Agent. Tidecast includes a contact User-Agent so those providers can reach us if app traffic causes a problem.
Maps: If you use the station map, Apple MapKit shows Apple map data and may handle map-related requests according to Apple's privacy practices.
No Other Uses: We don't share your email or zipped log file with anyone else or use them for anything other than fixing the problem. We also don't receive, store, or sell your current device location.
How We Protect Your Information
User Control: You decide if you want to send us the zipped log file. It won't be sent without your permission.
Safe Handling: We make sure to keep the email and zipped log file secure when we receive them. We don't collect anything else.
Deleting the File: Once we've fixed the problem, we might respond, but we'll also delete the original email and zipped log file. We don't keep them any longer than we need to.
On-Device Storage: Tidecast may store things on your device so the app works better, like selected stations, saved stations, cached tide/weather data, preferences, notification settings, and widget snapshots. This app data stays on your device and is not uploaded to us.
Changes To This Privacy Policy
Sometimes, we might need to change this policy. If we do, we'll make sure to let you know right in the app.
